Book excerpt: This report presents results of an experimental study of the mechanism of heat and mass transfer in the interaction of fluid and moist bodies with a gas stream. In the first series of experiments, evaporation of water, acetone, benzene, and butanol from an exposed surface was investigated. In the second series of experiments, heat and mass exchange were investigated under the same external conditions in the evaporation of water from a capillary-porous body, and heat exchange was investigated in a capillary-porous dry body. Some of the results of the completed experimental study are the following: (1) The heat exchange coefficients in evaporation are numerically higher than the heat exchange coefficients of the dry body under other-wise equal conditions; and (2) the processes of heat and mass exchange in evaporation from the surface of a capillaryporous body and from an exposed liquid surface are not analogous.
