Set in the Yukon, it tells the story of Frona Welse, "a graduate Valkyrie and Stanford physicist" who follows the trail after teasing her wealthy father's community by her direct manner and befriending the city prostitute. It is also torn between love for two suitors: Gregory St Vincent, a local man who turns out to be a coward and treacherous; and Vance Corliss, a Yale-trained mining engineer. The novel is notable for its strong and self-sufficient heroine, one of the many people who would interpret its fiction. Her name echoes that of her mother,
