Book excerpt: Traditional establishment techniques for perennial forages involve extensive use of tillage to control weeds before seeding and prepare a fine, firm seedbed. This report describes experiments conducted at four sites in northern Saskatchewan to determine the effect of reducing or eliminating tillage on hay and seeding production of alfalfa and meadow bromegrass. Three seeding dates were also included in the trials to see whether seeding date altered the response to reduced tillage. Results are presented in terms of such matters as crop establishment, weed populations, and crop productivity.
