Book excerpt: The 4th Regiment Virginia Reserves was organized in May 1864. It served in Southwestern Virginia and was known as Preston's Reserves. It fought at the Battle of Saltville.The reserve units were made up of men over the age of 45. Colonel Preston who was 53 at the time had seen prior service in the Virginia 28th Infantry Regiment.Some records indicate the regiment may have also served in the siege of Petersburg. Colonel Preston states that the regiment was with the Army of Tennessee at the surrender in North Carolina.
