Book excerpt: "Family-centered discharge preparation promotes parental readiness and leads to a successful transition to home, reducing unnecessary post-hospitalization healthcare usage and/or readmission. This paper presents outcomes from an evidence-based practice (EBP) change project addressing neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) nurses' knowledge deficit regarding the integration of family-centered care (FCC). The project followed a pre / post / retention survey design in conjunction with an educational intervention to measure baseline, gained, and retained knowledge. The surveys indicated participating NICU nurses (n = 159) gained knowledge as evidenced by a 21.7% increase in mean scores after the educational intervention. Nurses completing the retention survey four weeks after the intervention (n = 65) demonstrated only a slight decrease in knowledge as evidenced by a 3.5% decline in means from the post-test survey. The outcomes of the evidence-based educational intervention demonstrated an increase in the NICU nurses' knowledge regarding integration of FCC into daily practices. Findings from this project can be applied to the NICU setting to increase nurses' knowledge regarding integration of FCC to empower parents to successfully discharge to home and care independently for their infant.
