Book Synopsis Investigating the Relationship Between College Student Depression and Four Major Predictors by :

Book excerpt: It is widely known that many students on college campuses experience depression. Many factors contribute to this depression. The purpose of conducting this research was to determine which of four predictors, a lack of hope, previous negative life events, loneliness, or daily stress leads most to the depression found among these students. I hypothesized that a lack of hope would contribute most to college student depression and that previous negative life events, loneliness, and daily stress would follow, in this order, as predictors for the high rates of depression found among these students. The results of this study indicate daily stress to be the most significant predictor of college student depression, followed by loneliness and a lack of hope. The variable previous negative life events did not significantly predict college student depression. The findings of this research indicate the importance of incorporating programs to ease the stress that many college students experience every day. Establishing such programs may finally reduce the high levels of depression found on college campuses.
