Book excerpt: Motocross began in England in the 1920s and took firm root in post-war Europe. After arriving in North America in the late 1960s, the sport was embraced by enthusiasts and developed into an American phenomenon. By the early 1980s riders from the USA were dominating the sport’s natural-terrain circuits, and the uniquely-American spinoff discipline of Supercross was packing NFL stadiums nationwide. In 2005, the Motorcycle Hall of Fame Museum created an exhibit, Motocross America, which celebrates the history of American motocross. Motocross America is a lavishly illustrated book that features the bikes and memorabilia from the museum display and text by Bill Amick. The Motocross America exhibit is open to the public at the Motorcycle Hall of Fame Museum in Pickerington, Ohio, through 2006.
