Book excerpt: Murray Christmas the Boss Reindeer is an implausible story that further personifies Santa's Reindeer. Murray has accepted his new job and has been added to the reindeer herd along with other newcomers and right away he finds major problems related to the reindeer names. Comet and Cupid don't like their names. Once the topic surfaces, Murray finds that is a big problem for others too. Have you ever thought of changing your name? Then, there are the adventures of Donder's vacation down in the lower 48, and the newbie reindeer he encounters there. The story includes a historical fiction account of Robert L. May's development of Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer's addition to Santa's team. The modern day controversy of who really authored the famous Christmas poem that forever solidified the image of a jolly old St Nick as a part of modern day Christmas lore is explored. Early on, a wealthy landowner and minister of New York City, was recognized as the author of The Night Before Christmas, aka Twas The Night Before Christmas. His name was Clement Clarke Moore. However, we learn that Moore had somehow waited until after the death of a Major Henry Livingston, Jr., who lived much nearer the location in New York State, where the first account of the poem was anonymously published. We also find that the literary styles of Moore and Livingston are quite different, as well as their personalities, which in the author's opinion cast further doubt on the legitimacy of Moore as the likely author. The final part of this amusing little tale is an up-to-date version of The Night Before Christmas, By Murray Christmas the Boss Reindeer. "It was the night before Christmas, or called Christmas Eve.
