Book excerpt: Big Percy Jones was born in the South and raised in a racist society. He loses a family member to racist violence. Being an African American sheriff officer, Percy finds it hard to imagine that the reality of racism still affects the black man in contemporary America. Percy makes important decisions as the leader of the Jones family. He knows he must make a moral decision centered on the death of a family member.
