Book excerpt: 'Star Formation in Galaxies' was a large, international conference, held on June 16-19 1986 in Pasadena, California. There were over 200 attendees from 12 different nations, and together they brought experience and knowledge on many aspects of star formation in normal, star burst and active galaxies. On the observational side there was particular emphasis on the comparison of radio continuum and CO data with the IRAS data, and the nature of the energy source(s) of the most infrared-luminous extragalactic objects, but the discussion and poster papers range from the diffuse far-infrared emission in the Galaxy, through the detailed processes and triggers of star formation in disks and starburst nuclei, to the inter-relationship between an active nucleus and a surrounding starburst.
