Book excerpt: Unclassified information is presented on the use of nickel-base alloys in rotating machinery for aircraft, missiles, and related ground-support equipment. Less emphasis is placed on aircraft propulsion units, because a large bibliography already exists for these applications; only recent developments are included here. Rather, primary attention is placed on auxiliary power units and starters for aircraft, ground-support equipment, and turbopump units for missiles. This memorandum is concerned primarily with materials. Because the operational parameters are vastly different for the various turbines, the choice of alloy for a given application depends upon the wide variety of mechanical and physical requirements demanded by the service conditions. In addition, a summary of present and proposed manufacturing and fabrication methods is included. (Author).
