Book excerpt: This publication highlights major achievements of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) activities over the period 1970 to 1990. Chapter 1, "The Stockholm Conference and the Establishment of UNEP," describes the establishment of UNEP. Chapter 2, "The Role of UNEP," covers program development, environment and development, and UNEP's priorities. Chapter 3, "Two Decades of Achievements," highlights problems and programs in the areas of protection of the atmosphere, management of freshwater resources, protection of oceans and coastal areas, protection of land resources, conservation of biological diversity, management of toxic chemicals and hazardous wastes, development and quality of life, environmental monitoring, and other program activities (including environmental law, environmental education and training, public awareness, and UNEP's Clearinghouse). Each resource topic contains an introduction to the global environmental problem and an "Action" section that describes UNEP programs addressing the problems.
