Book excerpt: Anne Shirley starts her first term teaching at the Avonlea School, although she still continues her own studies at home. She now takes her place among the "important" and "grown up" people of Avonlea society, as its only schoolteacher. Anne is also a founding member of the Avonlea Village Improvement Society which tries to improve the Avonlea landscape.
