The sport witnessed a massive surge in women's involvement, marked by the inauguration of the U.S. Women’s Amateur Championship in 1895. Tennis also flourished, spawning national tournaments in the late 1880s, driving women's dress reform to abandon restrictive clothing to permit freedom of movement, and adopting colorful styles of the now ubiquitous tennis shoes. Articles about baseball, billiards, bowling, cricket, field hockey, football and soccer provide a comprehensive overview of women's engagement with popular ball games during this era. Several obscure and antiquated ball sports are also included in this collection, providing a fascinating glimpse into an array of ball games that never gained widespread popularity.
