Told from multiple points of view in the 1830s and 1950s, Butterflies and Demons is a compelling story of heartache and hope. Interweaved with the Kaurna story is an account of the author’s family in 1950s Adelaide, refugees from Eastern Europe. Adelaide was a bastion of Britishness and these ‘New Australians’ were not regarded favourably. The author and her family endured acute prejudice from people who prided themselves in their Britishness, and who felt overwhelmed by this influx of foreign people speaking strange languages and with seemingly uncouth habits. Like the Kaurna, the author also suffered at the hands of the British Empire.
