Book excerpt: "The Cooperative Game Fish Tagging Program is a joint research effort by scientists, recreational, and commercial fishermen. It is designed to provide basic information on the movements and biology of game fish populations in the Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico, and the Caribbean Sea through the direct participation of the public in scientific research. In 1990, program cooperators and scientists tagged and released 10,955 fish of 47 species in the Atlantic Ocean, Gulf of Mexico, and the Caribbean Sea. A total of 6,970 billfish were tagged and released: 3,309 sailfish, 1,274 white marlin, 1,993 blue marlin, and 394 swordfish. There were 1,256 tunas tagged and released: 597 yellowfin, 415 bluefin, and 244 miscellaneous tunas. Other species tagged and released by program cooperators were: 581 red drum, 772 tarpon, 456 king mackerel, 320 amberjack, and 201 cobia.
