Book excerpt: Pursuant to the Defense Base Closure and Realignment Act, Wurtsmith AFB was closed in June 1993. This EIS has been prepared in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act to analyze the potential environmental consequences of the disposal and reasonable alternatives for reuse of the base. The document includes analyses of community setting, land use and aesthetics, transportation, utilities, hazardous materials/wastes, soils and geology, water resources, air quality, noise, biological resources, and cultural resources. Three reuse alternatives were examined: a Proposed Action that features aircraft maintenance and refurbishing and general aviation uses of the runway; a Fire Training Alternative that proposes using half of the base for a regional fire training academy; and a Recreation Alternative that would retain more than 90 percent of the base for public facilities/recreational land uses. All alternatives also include mixed industrial, commercial, and residential uses. A No-Action Alternative, which would entail no reuse of the base property, was also evaluated.
