They were four weeks in fighting their way from London to Lands End, and two months more in crossing the stormy Atlantic. For five days they were enveloped in a dense fog, not daring to move in either direction; a weary time for the sixteen chil dren and their seventy-three elders, who clustered despairingly about the deck. But happily they escaped disaster. The most notable among the passengers was William Goodwin, a man destined to become of such in uence in both church and state that the town still delights to do him honor. During the following year more of Hadley's early settlers came over in the Griffin, and the tedium of the two months' voy age was beguiled by listening to one hundred and twenty ser mons, two being preached on each week - day and three on Sun day. Among the passengers were three divines, eminent both for learning and piety - the Rev. John Cotton, Thomas Hooker, and Samuel Stone.
