Book excerpt: Kaufmann's was founded in 1871 in Birmingham, now Pittsburgh's South Side. They moved to the North Side and then to their present location on Smithfield Street between Fifth and Forbes Avenues. In 1946, they joined the May Company and as of 2003, remain a regional division of May with stores in Pennsylvania, Ohio and New York. The collection consists of advertisements, booklets, a calendar, floor plans, newspaper clippings, shopping bags and other items. Floor plans for the 9th and 10th floor include the office space for Edgar Kauffman and the in-store hospital.
