Book Synopsis "Monumental Mockery": Humanist Subversion of the Heroic Ideal in Erasmus and Shakespeare by : Katherine Lacy Jones

Book excerpt: Chapter 3 looks at the ways Shakespeare dismantles the heroic appeal of the Iliad in Troilus and Cressida. I argue that Shakespeare satirizes the neoclassical and medieval modes of warfare the heroes appear to represent, subverts aspects of Chapman's translation of the Iliad, and makes Thersites a significant voice of social criticism.
