Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sixteenth Annual Report of the President of the John Hopkins University, Baltimore, Maryland, 1891 In presenting to you, and to the public through you, a report of the progress Of the Johns Hopkins University, dur ing the year ending September 1, 1891, it is pleasant to begin by recording the fact that the institution has been free from those financial anxieties which were felt a Short time ago in consequence of the failure of dividends from certain stocks given to it by its founder. This relief has been due in no small degree to the continued expenditure of the Emergency Fund generously contributed for this very purpose. It is also due to a change in the investment of a considerable part of the original endowment, from common stock of the Balti more and Ohio Railroad, to preferred stock of the potation. The timely gifts of our friends and the prompt action of our Finance Committee, supported by an increase in the charges for tuition and by willing economy in all the expenditures dependent upon the Faculty, have enabled the University to hold its own, completely, without any apparent diminution of its activity and usefulness.
