Book excerpt: American, most often Cherokee, formed in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee, the Carolinas and southwestern Virginia sometime between 1780 and 1800. This tradition originated as a result of marriages or family unions between the predominantly Celtic settlers and the Cherokee residents.
