Book Synopsis The Scots Magazine, 1782, Vol. 44 (Classic Reprint) by :

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Scots Magazine, 1782, Vol. 44 Mr Bamber Gafcoyne appealed to the' Houl'e, whether in candour and in truth there was the fmallefl ground for the in finuations thrown out, that the board of admiralty either withed to procrattinate, much lefs to avoid the in oiry altogether: but fome timewas nece ary to make out the papers moved for. Not one member of the board of admiralty had made the finallett objection to the inquiry; on the contrary, 'they had delired it might be taken upon as extenfive a fcale as pollible, confcious that the more ample thei i ry, the more completely would the pmic be undeceived, and would (be more plainly the grofs impofitiops that had been pron tiled upon them by the repeated caluino nies, bitter invectives, loofe unfounded afl'ertions, and the load of unmerited a bu re, 'poured forth againft thole who were in any degree anfwerable for the conduct of the admiralty. For his part, he did not mention this by way of complaint calumny and inveetive made but little ims prcflion on his mind; he knewthat they were mere words, and that words with out proof were but wind. That 0q was perhaps' more filled with the fort of wind he had jult alluded to, than any other place in the kingdom; and he might fairly adopt the fallot's expreflion, and pronounce it nine times out often, army foul wind buffed! Such as it was, how ever, it might continue to blow, hc lhould weather it as he could. The prefcnt in. Qnir would clear up the innocence ofthe admiralty; it would therefore be contrary to their intereit, and the groll'elt of ab: furdities in them, either to oppol'c it, or to impede its progrefs.
