Book Synopsis Word for the Day, 1873 by : James an Upjohn

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Word for the Day, 1873: Being Coincidences Culled From the Calendar The Old Testament is appointed for the First Lessons at Morning and Evening Prayer; so that the most part thereof will be read every year once, as in the Calendar is appointed. The New Testament is appointed for the Second Lessons at Morning and Evening Prayer. And to know what Lessons shall be read every day, look for the day of the mouth in the Calendar following, and there ye shall find the Chapters that shall be read for the Lessons, both at Morning and Evening Prayer. - Extract from the Book of Common Prayer. The object of this search in the Scriptures is to find the same thought in both Lessons; the Truth in one corroborated by the testimony in the other; the Deed illustrated by the type. Sometimes the ideas are parallel; sometimes they are contrasts; the two make up the light and shade in the our picture. They are the sides of the ark of the covenant dovetailed into each other. They are connecting links between the two Testaments. They prove both Books to be by the same Author. The Holy Ghost confirms what lie has said in the one Scripture by what He says in the other. These passages are galleries, joining the two main structures of Wisdom's house. They are successive stations on the "bright road" of the evangel-ecliptic. The things written aforetime; like features on the horizon, come prominently forward as they approach in yearly course the path of the True Light. As the sun glistens the sleet-covered tree on the mountain top, so the Sun of Righteousness, rising behind the towering types of the Old Dispensation, gives to them a silver lustre.
