Book excerpt: This book reviews the current state of health research and concludes that: more investment is needed, research need to be managed more effectively to help strengthen health systems and build public confidence in science; stronger emphasis should be placed on translating knowledge into action. There are five sections: learning to improve health, gives an overview and some historical perspective; towards a scientific basis for health systems; strengthening health research systems; linking research to action; and recommendations and an action plan.
